The Story
Cuatro Caminos is the coffee division of the Agronosotros Group and employs 45 producers. It was founded in 2014. With a business model of gradually raising funds from a number of investors, the company operates and develops farms with a long-term perspective, based in the Boquete region of Panama. For example, it redevelops abandoned farmland and farms with poor production conditions, transforming them into farms that can grow speciality coffee.
Andres Lopez, who is in charge of the overall agriculture there, has 30 years of experience in the coffee industry, and has a wide range of experience from growing seedlings, harvesting, post-harvest processing, exporting green beans, roasting, and quality control, and is said to be "like a walking coffee encyclopedia."
In order to make the coffee industry in the Boquete region sustainable, Cuatro Caminos places great importance on fulfilling its environmental and social responsibilities as well as ensuring that the business is viable. As part of its social responsibility activities, the company shares up to 20% of the net profits from its agricultural activities with its investors. The funds are used to provide basic infrastructure such as electricity, running water, flush toilets and gas stoves, as well as modern equipment, clothing and other materials to improve farmers' overall living conditions and working conditions. The company also provides social security that goes beyond the basic services provided by the government.
The group has 80 employees in total, but if you include their families, we are able to make a positive impact on the lives of 400 people living in the Boquete community. The 11 farms owned and managed by Cuatro Caminos are located far from the refinery. Some require a 40-minute walk, and some require a 30-minute walk just to move around the farm, but the coffee they obtain is worth the time and effort. One of Cuatro Caminos' missions is to find farms suitable for growing coffee, despite poor accessibility, and to lead them to success.
